For a woman, attending a black tie function offers a lot more flexibility in terms of the kind of outfit that can be worn, although it should still be smart. The watch word is elegance for a woman, and while it is tempting to opt for the classic little black dress, a proper gown is a much more appropriate choice. A black tie function features a four course meal, and it is considered impolite to leave the table during the actual meal itself. If you do need to be excused, the best time to leave the table for the bathroom is at the end of the starter, as the speeches normally take place during the break between the main course and the dessert.
