Wedding Cakes

For many couples, the crowning glory of their wedding day is their cake. These days, it is possible to choose from literally hundreds of stunning designs and to have a completely unique wedding cake that has been made especially for you in order to help you to celebrate your wedding day with the people that you love. Of course, these days, the cake is just one part of a much more complex feast, but its origins date back to the Middle Ages, a time when the wedding cake was the feast.

Historically, the wedding cake was a special meal that was produced by the family of the bride as part of the wedding celebrations for the couple. It was intended to provide a large and hearty meal for all of the guests, and was generally made weeks in advance as part of the preparation. Different recipes have been used over the years, but in general, a traditional wedding cake was made to the same recipe as a Christmas cake – albeit without the addition of any alcohol to the mixture.

The idea of decorating the wedding cake is not new either however this is more modern than the ancient tradition of the cake itself. Over time, the simple white icing that was used in order to signify purity for the marrying couple evolved into a much more elaborate affair – however in recent years, many couples are finding that they prefer the look of a much simpler cake rather than something too over the top.

In some cases, a wedding cake with several tiers has been used. While this is a relatively new phenomenon in terms of the population at large, it does date back a long way, and was a technique used by master bakers to produce a far more impressive display at state functions. The top tier of the cake is now often saved for the christening of the first child, although this is only possible with fruit cakes, as a sponge or chocolate cake will not keep for more than a couple of weeks.

A wedding cake can take a master baker two days to make and decorate, so they are not cheap. Wedding cakes with even more elaborate decorations can cost you several hundred dollars, but as a centerpiece for your wedding day, and the focus of attention for many of your guests, it is an investment that you will remember well. One of the traditional photos of any wedding is the cutting of the cake, and this is actually a traditional and symbolic act about sharing work and good times equally between the couple.

Most bakers will invite you to meet them before they make your wedding cake, and they will go through a number of options with you, such as what kind of cake you want, as well as discussing the various decorations that you can choose from. The cake is very much a symbol of your personality, so do not be afraid to make suggestions and explain exactly what you want. The cake maker will appreciate your help as they want to contribute to your special day as much as possible.
