In the past (the dim and distant past perhaps) when a couple got married, it also represented the time when they first shared a home together, which meant that choosing a wedding present was much easier. You would simply buy them the things that they needed for their homes, and that would be that. Now however, the vast majority of couples who marry have lived together, and this will generally meant that they have pretty much everything that they need in order to enjoy their home. Although some people don’t like the idea of sending out a wedding list to their guests – they think that it is a little bit rude to actually ask for specific things – the fact is that most wedding guests will actually prefer to see a wedding list before they come to your big day, as this will give them a few clues as to the things that you actually want.

A number of big department stores and online services offer the chance for couples to set out their wedding lists. Then every time someone buys an item from the list for you, that item is deleted from the existing wedding present list, so you don’t end up with a situation where you get several presents the same.

One of the main things that you need to consider when planning your wedding list is the prices of the presents that you place on it. Too expensive, and you may find that people go out and buy you things that they think you need rather than what you actually want. By the same token however, you should not put items on that you don’t like just because they are cheaper than the things you really want.

When choosing the presents that you put on your wedding present list, try and create a good range of different items so that people will have plenty of alternatives and will be able to find something that they can comfortably afford.

When you are choosing your wedding presents, it is an opportunity to get things that you would not normally spend money on – a chance for people that you know and love to spend a little time choosing you some thing that you would not buy for yourself, and something that you can treasure for the whole of your marriage. Popular choices for a wedding gift list include lead crystal glasses, picture frames for your wedding photos and even ornaments that can make your house more attractive.

If you really don’t need anything, then you could always ask for guests to contribute to your honeymoon – that way they can give you as much or as little as they like to go towards your holiday of a lifetime. Many people would also be happy to give you a donation towards buying a larger present such as a television or car, so don’t be afraid to ask about that either.
